Differential Cut/Differential Construction Explained

All Gryphon Gear quilts and sleeping bags are differentially cut. What this means is that the
width or circumference of the outer shell is greater than the width or circumference of the
inner shell. This construction, though more labor intensive, is considered to be superior to non-differentially cut quilts and bags.

There are several advantages to this type of construction:

  • First, if you visualize a smaller cylinder inside a larger cylinder, you can see that if you
push out with both elbows on opposite sides of the inner cylinder that there is still
insulation thickness between the inner and outer shells. If both cylinders had the same
diameter the insulation thickness would be reduced to zero.
  • Second, in a differentially cut quilt or bag the down is allowed to loft outward, so that
the cut width of the inner shell fabric is the actual width when in use. Compare this to a non-differentially cut product where the width of the outer and inner shells are the
same. In that case the down must loft inward, thus taking away from the usable width.
Our widths are actual usable widths.
