Taurus VRB™ Sleeping Bag
Taurus VRB™ Sleeping Bag
Maximum Warmth. Minimum Weight.
The Taurus VRB™ is built for backpackers and mountaineers that are planing cold-weather backpackers who want serious thermal efficiency without carrying a heavier sleep system extended trips in a sub-freezing environment.
The vapor-radiation barrier precludes water vapor given off by the sleeper’s body from condensing in the insulation which over time would reduce insulation loft and comfort range.
At the same time the VRB adds additional warmth of up to 15 degrees without adding additional insulation material(down).
- Aluminized Dyneema® vapor-radiation barrier lining helps increase warmth performance by up to 15°F without adding extra down
- 900 fill power HyperDRY®* water-resistant RDS-certified goose down
- 80% overfilled for stable, non-shifting insulation
- Fully baffled construction eliminates cold spots
- Built for cold, dry conditions where warmth-to-weight matters most

Taurus VRB™ Sleeping Bag Details
Is the Taurus VRB™ Sleeping Bag Right for You?
The Taurus VRB™ is built for cold-weather backpackers who prioritize maximum warmth, efficiency, and reliability in freezing, dry conditions. Choose the Taurus VRB™ if:
- You regularly camp in sub-freezing temperatures and want serious thermal protection
- You want added warmth efficiency without increasing down weight
- You value a system designed for stable, all-night insulation performance
- You’re okay managing a more technical sleep system built for cold, dry environments
Important: This bag is not designed for above-freezing conditions and can become uncomfortably warm and moisture-heavy if used in milder temperatures. It performs best when the conditions stay cold enough that heat retention is a priority, not ventilation.
Taurus VRB™ Sleeping Bag Key Features
What we do to ensure warmth:
- Aluminized Dyneema®*, combined vapor-radiation barrier lining (patent pending)
- 900 fill power HyperDRY®** water-resistant RDS (Responsible Down Standard) certified goose down
- 80% overfilled to ensure consistent, non-shifting insulation thickness
- Differential construction to ensure maximum design loft is achieved
- Side block baffle to maintain a 60:40 top-to-bottom insulation distribution, allowing the bag to be flipped, resulting in a 10° rating difference.
- Fully baffled internal construction with no sewn-through seams eliminating cold spots
- Integral Collar
What we do to ensure a better product:
- Durable, light weight 10D downproof, DWR nylon shell (Heavier 20D fabrics are available by special request)
- Internal serged (overlocked) fabric edges
- Quality 900 fill power, HyperDRY®*, Responsible Down Standard (RDS) certified goose
down - Replaceable edge tensioners (rubber can degrade typically in 3 to 5 years making sewn
on elastic edging useless) - Nylon baffle material
- Silnylon frost bib (breath condensation guard) to keep moisture and ice from breath from soaking bag at chin area
- 56 inch, number 3 light weight YKK®*** zipper backed with full thickness draft flap
- Stuff sacks and storage bags are supplied with all quilts and bags

Hood Options
The Taurus VRB™ is intentionally designed without a hood to be the sweet spot between the weight savings of a quilt and the sealed warmth and draft protection of a traditional mummy bag. A hoodless system offers serious weight savings and flexibility across changing conditions.
When to add a hood:
If you are going to be out when it is cold and are a side sleeper, you should consider one of our down hoods. A hood allows you to rotate from side to back to side in the sleeping bag or quilt while keeping the face opening properly located on your head. You can even do this with a mummy bag by putting your head through the face opening and snugging the draw cord around the hood at the neck. When it is cold a knitted hat is not enough insulation. The head covering insulation thickness should be similar to that of the bag or quilt. We have added under-arm nylon straps to the hood to maintain the orientation of the hood on the user’s head. The hoods use 10D nylon on the outside with 20D silnylon used in areas of potential moisture accumulation. The inside of the hood is either 10D nylon, to be used with an Aries Quilt of our standard Taurus Bag, or aluminized Dyneema®, to be used with our Taurus VRB™ Bag. We use 800 fill power goosed down in our hoods. The nylon lined hoods use our standard 80% overfill while the VRB™ Hoods use a 100% overfill.

At Gryphon Gear, there is no mass production or one-size-fits-all approach. Every product is built from the ground up based on:
- Your height determines the cut.
- Your movement shapes the fit.
- Your adventures define the warmth.
The result is a system that traps heat more efficiently, eliminates dead space, and performs exactly how you need it to night after night.
